This week, Jimmy Carter High school specialized in raising awareness to live drug-free, naming it Red Ribbon Week.

“Since its beginning in 1985, the Red Ribbon has touched the lives of millions of people around the world. In response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America” Red ribbon campaign, said

Teenagers in high school set a commitment to live drug-free, knowing that it can be difficult for them. Their surroundings make it complicated, knowing that their peers can do drugs or other types of violence red ribbon week holds.

“Red ribbon week means being affirmed to commitment to live drug-free,” Nallely Guajardo said.

Teachers, as a leader, want to inspire their students to do their best, guide them to the right path.

If as a teacher supports red ribbon week, then students will see it as an inspiration, to be drug-free,” Felomina Bangsalud, AVID teacher, said.

Most of the percentage of students in high school don’t know the meaning of why schools present a week to have awareness in living drug-free. Administrators in higher education levels, aware of how difficult it can be for young adults to be clean, set this week to represent the background behind it.

“For me, red ribbon week symbolizes drug use and the importance of it being in high school. I don’t think we know how important drug use is and how dangerous it is and how detrimental it can be affecting drug use,” Rubie Hernandez said.

Red Ribbon Week impacts students’ lives and makes them think before acting.
