The principal, Claudia Gomez-Perez, from Jimmy Carter Early College High School, has implemented hallway passes to prevent students from skipping their courses. This makes it a problem for a small variety of students who have to get the hallway to give as this can cause the spread of germs.

Junior Vianey Falcon said, “I believe sometimes hall passes can be both necessary and unnecessary but in different circumstances.”

Although some students at Jimmy Carter don’t like this choice, Ms. Gomez was proven to have made the right decision as students have recently been skipping less once they needed hallway passes to get to their destination. This encouraged more students to focus more on their academic work than hanging out with other classmates from different periods. Even though this decision was viewed negatively at first, there haven’t been any issues with this recent decision.

“Coming from experience, I have so far seen a lot of cons weighing out the pros. The new hall passes are a COVID-19 hazard. They are an extra nuisance to worry about for teachers and are sometimes not even needed.” Vianey said.

Certain few will disagree on using one hallway pass that they have to share as it can cause the spread of the deadly virus during the pandemic. Even if the student does not carry the virus, they are still concerned. Few students have their hallway pass as they don’t feel comfortable taking a shared hallway pass, making it more accessible as this could help from spreading germs to other students. Most teachers will let the student go to the restroom without a hallway pass as this can cause another problem as there is a high possibility for any students going out to decide to go wherever on the campus. Due to this recent event, it is not entirely clear to students if this will be for the rest of the year till they graduate or if it’s a one-time thing as hallway passes in the past have never been implemented heavily.
